As some of you know, I now divide my time between London & lovely South of France (yes the French Riviera ! 🤩) where I am blessed to enjoy lots of sunshine but also lots of fresh food (these French markets…🥰). Lemons are part of them & in fact there is a festival for them in Menton right now. So I thought I would dedicate my “What to eat” series to them today 🍋🍋🍋
Of the citrus family, lemons are nutritious & well-known for containing lots of vitamin C & flavonoids, powerful antioxidants helping with overall health. They also contain fibre, mostly in the form of pectin (in their pulp), a soluble fibre with many health benefits.
Many explorers died of scurvy before the vitamin C benefits of lemons (as well as many other fruits & vegs) were discovered.
Benefits of lemons
- Skin health (think collagen!)
- Immunity
- Digestion/gut health
- Support heart health
- Helps prevent anaemia (by increasing the absorption of iron)
I personally LOVE them & tend to add them to many of my meals. They are great in savoury as well as sweet dishes & I love their tart & sharp flavour. They can be added to baked foods, dressings, drinks, marinades…pretty much anything! I am not super keen on desserts but one of my favourite one is a lemon posset, super easy to do & yummy 😋
